Social Action
Social Action opportunities at Yavneh and in the wider community include:
Tutoring Team at Wilburn Elementary
Yavneh joins with St. Mark's to help students at Wilburn Elementary in Raleigh twice weekly with reading. Volunteers are always welcome, as the need for reading assistance at Wilburn is far greater than can be meet with our small but dedicated group. Please contact Terry Wall (919-832-3055) to discuss becoming a volunteer tutor.
New Hope Community Garden
The community garden is a project of the New Hope Alliance, a collaborative effort of St. Mark’s, St. James, Trinity Presbyterian, Longview Baptist, Iglesia Bautista Renovación Cristiana and Yavneh. Harvesting in the garden takes place every Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., and the harvested crops are donated to the Interfaith Food Shuttle for distribution to those in most need. The garden is located at St. James United Methodist Church, just off New Hope Road, north of Buffaloe Road. Turn west on Sue Ellen Drive, then take an immediate right turn onto St. James Church Road. Go to the second driveway on the right. The garden is behind the smaller buildings at the end of the parking lot. Please bring your own hat, gardening gloves, sun screen, and bug spray. Read more about the garden in this article from the News&Observer.
The alliance is now an official garden partner with Compost Now, http://compostnow.org/garden-partners, and should begin receiving compost by spring planting season. If you do not currently compost your household scraps, go to www.compostnow.org to see if the paid service is available in your zip code. If available, please consider composting and donating your compost to the New Hope Community Garden.
The Jewish Family Services B’Yachad Program is recruiting volunteers for a friendly visitor outreach to Jewish patients in area hospitals. Contact Tracey Bennett, the JFS B’Yachad volunteer coordinator (919-676-2200).
If you're involved in a project that you think would be of interest to other Yavneh members, or have an idea for a project you'd like to start, contact us, and we'll help you make it happen!
