Lifecycle Events

Yavneh offers its members the opportunity to celebrate a variety of lifecycle events such as welcoming ceremonies, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, marriage, conversion, and end of life. As a Renewal-based congregation, we encourage members to take an active role in shaping these moments to meet their individual spiritual and emotional needs, while staying firmly rooted in traditional Jewish practices

Welcoming ceremonies

Whether you are interested in a more traditional bris or baby naming ritual, or would like to work with the Rabbi or Cantor to design a more individually meaningful ceremony, Yavneh can accommodate you. In addition you can choose between a private event or one held in conjunction with a community-wide service.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

At Yavneh we believe that Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations need to involve the individual, the family, and the congregation. It is a joyous event marking the transition from child to Jewish adult. In keeping with the Renwal tradition, a child who celebrates a Bar or Bat Mitzvah within the Yavneh community has a unique opportunity to shape a process that compliments their specific interests, spirituality, and individual capabilities.

When a child celebrates their Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Yavneh, we expect that:
  • They have received a minimum of two years of religious instruction, either at our educational partner Sha'arei Israel, or in some cases another synagogue.
  • They have met with Yavneh's Rabbi and Cantor over the year prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah to receive additional instruction.
  • Their family has been active members of Yavneh for at least two years prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, having regularly participated in community activities and attended religious services.
